Golf as a Business Tool
As many of you know, the inaugural Promethius Charity Classic golf outing takes place on Friday, September 23rd. We very much hope that you can join us in raising money for a great charity, the Indiana Down Syndrome Foundation. As if a great cause wasn’t enough to get you to join in, we thought we would remind you of the valuable business opportunities that golf can offer.

In most cases golf with a client, vendor or peer will do nothing but add to your bottom line. The game and the setting do 90% of the work for you. How could you not bond with a business associate while on a golf course? We did some major digging to find some exceptions to the rule. Enjoy, and don’t try this at our golf outing!

Deep Six
Bob Krendall of Salem, Oregon was enjoying a day on the links with a potential customer that would have doubled his consulting business. All was going quite well until, on the way to the 13th tee box, Bob turned the cart left around a bend when he should have turned right. Bob’s moneybags prospect barely had enough time to bark out a choice four-letter word before the cart and all its contents plunged into a pond. Bob lost the deal.

That’s a Wrap
Tom Della of Joliet, IL was quite excited when a Senior VP of his company invited him for an afternoon of golf. This was quite out of the ordinary, and Tom knew that he was at the very least in the running for a big promotion. Nerves got the best of Tom that day. The VP was a great golfer and was clearly sizing Tom up throughout the round. As Tom’s score increased, his stress level ballooned. His play was truly awful.

Finally on the 18th tee Tom had had enough. He swung at his tee shot with all his might only to bloop it barely past the ladies’ tee. In a fit of rage he leveled the driver in his hands like a baseball bat and swung it, wrapping it around the trunk of a nearby oak tree. The outing of Tom’s temper in front of the VP paled in comparison to the fact that Tom had inadvertently pulled the driver out of the VP’s bag. Tom didn’t get the promotion.

Hear our Prayer
Reverend Jennings was visiting Owens, VA in the hopes of filling the position of Pastor at a local church. Three church elders decided to treat the reverend to a round of golf as a way to get to know him better. The Reverend’s two sons joined the round as caddies.

A red flag was raised when, in between nines, the sons fished the car keys out of an elder’s golf bag and treated themselves to a joy ride in his brand new Cadillac. Unfortunately, the eldest of the boys was only twelve years old and couldn’t see much past the windshield wipers. The boys traveled a few dozen yards before plunging through the back wall of the pro shop. No mulligans were allowed.

Last Chance for the State Fair!

As we're nearing the unofficial end to the summer, this weekend is your last chance to visit the State Fair.

Be sure to stop by our favorite vendor while you're getting in your final fair food: the Indianapolis Jaycees Corn Booth!

The Jaycees are in their 40th year of serving hot, buttered corn to patrons who line up for the treat.

All proceeds go directly into the operating budget for the Indianapolis chapter. Some projects that benefit from the profits include an annual food basket drive in December, and Clothe-a-Child — a back to school shopping trip for local children.

The Indianapolis Star featured the Jaycees Corn Booth in a recent article.

Stop by the booth, between the Our Land Pavillion and the Marsh Agriculture Building for a $2 ear of corn, before the fair is over!

Personal Budgets
Are you a budget-oriented person? While we often view those who are as misers, stingy or anal-retentive, statistics show that budgeters lead happier, less-stressful lives. Despite a myriad of excuses, most of us don’t live according to a budget because we are intimidated by the prospect of creating the budget or simply by facing the truth of our own financial realities. It can be quite scary to see on paper, for instance, that you’ve been deficit spending by $1,000 per month for the past six months, but this is the reality that many of us must face before we can expect to start digging out.

Rather than opening the check register once per month, ones finances should be constantly reviewed. If you’re not checking

Want to start? Here are our quick recommendations:

1. Get started as soon as possible, these things are easy to put off.

2. Don’t recreate the wheel, use a simple program like Intuit’s® Quicken®.

3. Don’t succumb to excuses such as, “I make so little money, there’s no room or need to budget.”

4. Visit http://www.personal-budget-planning-saving-money.com before you start.

into your finances at least once per week then you probably aren’t getting an accurate, timely picture of your spending habits. Purchases of gasoline and cups of coffee can really add up over the course of a week and it’s necessary to know where you stand so you can make adjustments as you go.

Whether you choose to budget using simple spreadsheets or elaborate computer programs, the key to building a budget is to sit down with your bank statements, receipts and whatever evidence of your spending and saving habits you can find and just start documenting. If you are living beyond your means, make the hard decisions of what to cut. Often ridding yourself of the second $500 per month car payment is a hard decision to make, but it may be necessary.

Set savings goals and set that money aside first. Most people decide that they’ll see what’s left over at the end of the month and then that will be put aside. Using this methodology almost assures that there will be no savings. Some imagine that the retirement plan they have setup is enough savings. This approach does not account for lost jobs, unexpected cross-country trips for a beloved aunt’s funeral or for blown car engines.
