Print Design Considerations
Before
you can ask for a quote from your printer(s), you need to organize
your ideas and figure out exactly what you want from your print
project. Consider your budget, your audience, and your overall
message. Set up an initial meeting with your printer(s) and/or
designer and go over your design ideas. When you meet, make
sure to discuss these key factors:
Project
description – Is this going to be a postcard
or a poster? Do you need a tri-fold brochure, or a small booklet?
Give specific details about what you are trying to say in your
message, and ask your printer and/or designer for samples of
what they have done with similar projects.
Quantity – How many of these pieces do you need?
Size
– What dimensions does this piece need to be?
Is it going to be mailed? Does it need to fit in an envelope?
Paper
Stock – Is this going to be on a color paper?
Does the paper have to have a finish, or a certain weight?
Color
– Is this project going to be filled with colorful
photographs and graphics? Does this project only need one or
two colors?
Bindery – Will this project need to be
folded, perforated, collated, or stitched?
Due Dates - How soon does the project need
to be completed?
Communication
is the most important factor to ensure a smooth setup and delivery
of your printed piece. Be specific with your design ideas, and
make sure that your printer/designer are on the same page.

Color
Separation-
The act of decomposing a color graphic or photo into single-color
layers. For example, to print full-color photos with an offset
printing press, one must first separate the photo into the four
basic ink colors: cyan, magenta, yellow, and black (CMYK). Each
single-color layer is then printed separately, one on top of
the other, to give the impression of infinite colors.
This type of color separation, mixing three or four colors to
produce an infinite variety of colors, is called process color
separation. Another type of color separation, called spot color
separation, is used to separate colors that are not to be mixed.
In this case, each spot color is represented by its own ink,
which is specially mixed. Spot colors are effective for highlighting
text but they cannot be used to reproduce full-color images.

Congratulations
Runners Promethius
would like to congratulate Denver Abernathy and his fiancée,
Katie Jolley, on finishing the Chicago Distance Classic half
marathon on August 1! Neither Denver nor Katie broke any records,
but both were proud to finish the race on one of the hottest
days of the year.
Keeping
Your Home PC Healthy – Part 2
Perform Windows Updates
Running
Windows Update regularly is very important if your computer
is connected to the Internet or to other computers. It is
Microsoft's way of fixing bugs in your operating system --
bugs that may leave your computer vulnerable to attacks such
as viruses and worms. In any case, your computer will perform
better and be safer if you apply AT LEAST the critical patches.
Windows updates can be performed at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com.
You should check for updates several times per month or set
your PC to check automatically every day.
Remove
Spyware
Spyware
is Internet jargon for Advertising-Supported software (Adware).
It is a way for shareware authors to make money from a product,
other than by selling it to the users. Advertising companies
also install additional tracking software on your system,
which is continuously "calling home," using your
Internet connection and it reports statistical data to interested
parties. Users should run an adaware program such as Spybot
to remove these programs on a monthly basis. Spybot can be
downloaded for free from http://www.downloads.com.
After installation, run the (easy mode) version. Be sure to
download all updates and immunize. Finally, scan for problems
in the Search and Destroy section and choose “Fix selected
Problems” when the scan completes.
Purchase
a Firewall
Before
you connect your computer to the Internet, you should install
a firewall. A firewall is a piece of software or hardware
that helps protect your PC against hackers and many computer
viruses and worms. Using a firewall is the most important
first line of defense for computer security. If you have a
broadband internet connection such as DSL or Cable modem,
we recommend that you buy a hardware firewall.
Remember, unlike using dialup Internet connections, if your
PC is turned on, then it is wide open to attack. Software
firewalls are difficult for novice users to configure and
maintain and typically cause more problems than they solve.
Both Dlink and Linksys are satisfactory brands of firewalls.
Note that you can connect up to four additional computers
to the firewall, thus adding a small home network for no additional
charge. No firewall -- not a responsible decision.
At a minimum, if you have the Microsoft Windows® XP operating
system, you should use its built-in Internet Connection Firewall.
If you are using any other operating system or accessing a
corporate network over the internet you may need an additional
hardware-based firewall between your home PC and the Internet.
See http://www.microsoft.com/security/protect/
for instructions on configuring your Windows® XP firewall.
Install
a Popup Blocker
Stop unwanted
ads from opening when browsing the Internet by using a popup
blocker. We recommend using Google Toolbar to block popup
ads. It can be downloaded from http://toolbar.google.com.
Popups are more than nuisances; some popups can actually damage
your system.
If you have questions about any of the items listed above, please
call the office at 317-733-2388.
