Happy Groundhogs Day

Groundhog Day, February 2nd, is a popular tradition. It is the day that the Groundhog comes out of his hole after a long winter sleep to look for his shadow.

If he sees it, he regards it as an omen of six more weeks of bad weather and returns to his hole.

If the day is cloudy and, hence, shadowless, he takes it as a sign of spring and stays above ground.

Here are some fun web sites to celebrate this overshadowed holiday.

Software Licensing

Many of you have contacted us
recently about your software licenses. In most cases, it's because you have heard radio ads or have received direct mail pieces concerning the Business Software Alliance (BSA). The BSA is a real group, founded in 1988, whose
responsibilities are to lobby on behalf of software vendors, educate
developers and end-users and, most importantly to you and me, fight software piracy.

They have recently become very
active in their fight against illegal
copying of software. Their job is to
act as the police for Microsoft, Adobe, Symantec, Apple, Macromedia, Novell, Corel and many other software companies. They have the authority to investigate suspect organizations, pay rewards to informants, and levy fines against violators. In some cases, they will even file criminal charges.

Now is a good time to review your
existing software licenses and to
review your long-term software policies. Here are some hints:

1. Always keep everything that comes with a new computer in a well-marked, easily identifiable location.

2. If you buy something other than a name-brand computer, make sure it comes with all software and license packs.

3. Keep a file of all group purchase license certificates.

4. Keep all financial records of
software purchases (remember that new computers usually include the operating system software and often times many other software packages as well).

5. Purchase all upgrade licenses
BEFORE you upgrade. Don't make the mistake of upgrading the software thinking you'll pay for it later. This makes it very difficult to keep track.

6. Here is a list of software to start
your investigation:

determining your current status or in developing a software license policy, please give us a call at the office.

Simple things you can do to visually spruce up a dull document

You have worked hard to get your content proofread. And while all of your information is correct and enlightening it still lacks something. You know it's just a simple text document but you want it to stand out. You want it to be appealing to your audience. Here are some simple solutions that can help.

Work with the type. By changing the font, font size, and the style of the font (bold, italic, underline) you can come up with text that attracts the eye.

here are a few examples:
Hawaii isn't just a single island state, but eight stately islands.

You name it, we've got it. Forests, Mountains, Lakes, and unique resorts. Fishing, Golf, Horse back riding and more.

Add images By placing images or clip art in your document, you give the audience something they can identify with and that will leave a lasting impression.

Structure your information Most people prefer to look at organized visual and verbal information. Using text columns or an outline for your information can help your document become easier to read.

Make it colorful You can do so much with color. By adding one color you can set the mood for your whole document. Just remember pastel and cool colors are tranquil, while bright warm colors are more aggressive.

Be unconventional Try new things. Not everything has to be on white 8 1/2 x 11 paper. If nothing seems to work, remember opposites attract. Try putting something big next to something small, or something colorful next to something black. You'll be amazed at what can happen.
