Association Management Software

At some point, every association faces the difficult decision of what to do about its database. We weigh the options, discuss it with coworkers and colleagues, consider bringing it to the board, drop it for six months and then start the process all over again. As we all know, boards don't like to pay for solutions to our problems.

The options are few and expensive:

1. Keep what you have with all of its problems.

2. Build on what you have with all of its problems.

3. Try to develop a system in-house to meet your needs.

4. Contract with a development firm to build a customized system.

5. Buy an "off-the-shelf" association management system.

More and more, people are choosing the "off-the-shelf" option. The advantages include sharing the good ideas of others, spreading development costs over multiple associations, and opportunities for interaction with fellow users. The disadvantages include less control of the final product, less access to developers, and inability to meet changing needs of your association.

One thing remains constant with all of the options above; everyone gets frustrated with his/her membership database. You are not alone after all! Databases are complex, ever-changing pieces of software with users of varying skill and patience levels. Problems should be expected.

If you are in the decision-making process or if you'd like advice on your current software, Promethius Consulting is here to help.

Win98 Up-To-Date

To make sure you're up-to-date on all the latest components in Windows 98, use the Web-based Update Wizard, which scans your system for old drivers and system files. If there's a newer version on Microsoft's servers, the Update Wizard can automatically update you--if you set it up to do so. Select Start/Windows Update (on some systems you may need to select Start/Settings/Windows Update), and wait until you reach Microsoft's update Web site. Then select the Update Wizard link, and follow the instructions to establish your update account. Also, make sure you are running Win98 Second Edition rather plain old Win98. To make sure, right click "My Computer" and choose "options". Your System setting should say "Widows 98 Second Edition". If not, you can send away to Microsoft for a free upgrade.
